The Trend of Dry Brushing

If you’re wondering how to exfoliate and rejuvenate your body, I’m here to introduce you to dry brushing. This is a practice that has been gaining popularity and with good reason. Dry brushing has many potential benefits, from smoother skin to helping with lymphatic drainage. Before you run out and buy that brush and go to town on your skin, there are some things you should know. Dry brushing is not intended to be a medicinal treatment and should not be viewed as one. If you have a skin condition, such as psoriasis, you should speak with your doctor before dry brushing. Be sure to avoid brushing over or around an open wound or infection.

In dry brushing, the skin is typically brushed upward toward the heart, starting at the feet and brushing upwards at the hands and brushing toward the chest. Dry brushing should always be completed before bathing, and of course, don’t forget to moisturize.

There are tangible benefits to dry brushing, but it's also important to separate fact from fiction. One undeniable benefit is the removal of dead skin cells, which can leave your skin feeling noticeably smoother and softer. I've been dry brushing for years and have personally experienced this. While the changes may not be dramatic, feeling good about the body you live in is always a worthwhile goal. Dry brushing is a simple and affordable practice, so I've decided to continue.

  • Do not dry brush excessively, at a maximum, three times per week.

  • Keep away from delicate zones.

  • Don't brush too hard; a delicate and smooth stroke frequently works best.

  • To prevent mildew, clean your brush with soap and water at least once a week and dry it in an open area.

  • Do not share your brush.

  • As with any aspect of health or life, it's empowering to conduct your own research and make choices based on what works best for you. This approach ensures that you're well-informed and in control of your skincare routine, including the decision to incorporate dry brushing.
